Hyperopia is also known as being farsighted. Hyperopia is a refractive condition that results when the curvature of the cornea is too flat. When the cornea is too flat it is unable to bend light enough to focus it onto the retina. Children are usually hyperopic early in life and the condition decreases as they get older. There is a component of heredity as well and it is not uncommon to see similar prescriptions of a farsighted nature in an immediate family. Hyperopia can result in an eyeball that is smaller than a normal size as well. Hyperopia can be treated with eyeglasses with positive lenses to give the eye's system more power to bend the light perfectly onto the retina. Positive powered contact lenses can accomplish this as well. Refractive surgery is an option as well. Hyperopia can be detected during your yearly routine eye examination and a proper treatment plan will be given.
