Macular Degeneration is a condition that rapidly or gradually causes central vision loss and distortion. Macular degeneration may not have visual symptoms if the condition is the dry form of macular generation. Dry macular degeneration has calcium deposits and pigment clumps in the macula of the retina. There are not any signs of central scotoma (blind spot), sub retinal fluid, retinal pigment epithelium detachment or neovascularization in the macula like the wet form of macular degeneration. Wet macular degeneration is the most threatening to central vision. The patient experiences distortions and complete blind spots in their central vision over time. There is a strong heredity factor as well and it is not uncommon to see the condition run in immediate families. The condition can be treated with supplements, diet and laser surgery. Macular degeneration can be detected during your yearly routine eye examination and if detected the proper treatment plan can be designed for you.
